How to Become a Motor City Wheelz Athlete
Eligibility:
The NWBA has many divisions for competition including the junior, men’s and women’s college, women’s adult and 3 men’s adult leagues. The Motor City Wheelz compete in the Junior Division. The Junior Division is composed of two different levels and is available for boys and girls. All leagues follow NCAA rules of play with minor adaptations for our needs. You can find out more information on the website at www.nwba.org.
To be eligible to play in the NWBA, a person needs to have a permanent physical disability and fit into the functional classification system of the NWBA.
The Prep Level is for athletes who are 13 years of age and younger. They play with a lower basket height than any other level, at 8 ½ feet. Special consideration and exceptions can be approved through the league for older athletes with disabilities that will allow them to play at this level. Determination for which level of play the athlete is best suited for will be determined by the coaching staff at the beginning of the season and exception forms will be submitted after discussion with the athlete and family. Players who are accepted for the prep level through this process cannot play in any other division.
The Varsity Level is for athletes up to 21 years of age as long as they are still enrolled in a high school program. They play with a regulation basket height, at 10 feet. This is the most competitive level in the junior division. The 10’ level is divided into two divisions based on standings. The top 16 teams in the division compete at the National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (NJWBT) and the next 16 compete at the National Junior Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (NJIWBT). There are approximately 48 clubs throughout the country that compete in the junior division.
To be eligible for participation with the Motor City Wheelz, you must register and submit the proper forms on the NWBA website.
